Mercedes Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton of Britain celebrates after winning the world championship following …
Made you proud to be British, didn't it? As Lewis Hamilton careered around a track on his way to a second Formula One World Championship in Abu Dhabi on Sunday, Prince Harry apparently spoke for a nation when he said: "Lewis thank you very much for not making the British public sweat. You are an absolute legend. Well done, mate."
The only problem being is it didn't make the British public sweat. Unless you were in the desert heat of Abu Dhabi, there was a fair chance you were not sweating. Stuck in Blighty during the penultimate Sunday of a dank November, it hardly provided cold comfort. There is probably a better than average chance that you were not even watching.
Unless you are right into the nuts and bolts of motorsports, Formula One remains an elitist pursuit that has about as much room for the man in the street as Hamilton has in the cockpit of his Mercedes.
The best car wins, not the best driver. It is a sport built on the shifting sands of technology, not on the flair and imagination of the individual. It is all about the machine.
Still, he managed to edge a pesky German out of the reckoning which must have gone down well with UKIP voters. Or 'Arry in getting one over on the land of his forefathers.
I've felt more pride at managing to unhinge the lid on a vinegar bottle with greasy hands than learning of Hamilton's success. Good luck to Lewis as he sped into Heathrow Airport on Monday night apparently on his way to becoming a quarter of a billionaire.
[HOW LEWIS HAMILTON EARNED OUR SYMPATHY]
Good luck to his girlfriend with the yogurt adverts, 'Arry and the rest of the beautiful folk who frequent Formula One, but how can the public possibly identify with a multi-millionaire tax exile driving a sports car around a track in the middle of the desert?
Living in Monaco after leaving these shores for a stint in less taxing times in Switzerland, it must be reassuring to know that he won't be forced to hand over any of his hard-earned cash to the NHS or public services that could do with more help than just the lip service of letting the garage know he is coming in for a tyre change. Makes you proud to be British.
One wonders if Sue Barker will ask how he feels about living in a tax haven for the past seven years when he mounts the rostrum at the British Sports Personality of the Year award as part of the cult that particular awards night attracts. Makes you proud to be British.

I didn't have an extra skip in my step on Monday morning because of Lewis. It was hardly like Bobby Moore lifting Jules Rimet in 1966. Such days are long gone, and will never return. It is tough to get excited about what sport represents these days because so many sportsmen or women are film stars in their own false sense of reality. They are remote, and detached as a result of surrounding themselves with bad advice from PR sorts.
The only sport that can truly foster a sense of national pride remains football, but even it is in danger of falling of a cliff's edge because of the amount of cash some of these national figures are wallowing in. Rather than command respect, football players are viewed as an unsavoury example of unscrupulous, disgusting largesse.
[LEWIS HAMILTON'S NOT JUST A BETTER DRIVER - HE'S A BETTER MAN]
Like the people that have somehow managed to represent us in Parliament, they have little or nothing in common with the people they ask to vote for them.
Hamilton reminds me a bit of Phil Collins or Frank Bruno. One quit the UK for Switzerland, the other threatened to. Hamilton tried to suggest he left Switzerland seven years ago because of press intrusion which was as ill-advised as taking a chicane too fast. It was fairly bogus information.
Nationalism is a thorny issue this weather, but there is a phoniness to draping yourself in the Union Jack when this country continues to reward dodgy behaviour on the scale of Dame Shirley Porter.
Hamilton is likely to be awarded a knighthood for avoiding tax. But look at the basic intelligence of the people who are endorsing these awards.
The Labour leader Ed Miliband took the outrageous decision to sack a member of the shadow cabinet last week after she posted a picture on Twitter of a house with a couple of England flags and a white van.
There were virtually no words on the tweet, but Emily Thornberry was accused of mocking the working class. So there we go. Even with no comment, you are persecuted for inference. She should never had paid with her position, but this is the state of the Labour Party these days.
When asked what he felt when he saw a house with English flags flying outside it, Miliband said he felt "respect". Which made you feel like vomiting. Would he feel the same about a few Polish flags next door? What if we all started hanging flags outside out of our doors? Would that contribute to a better mood in society?
Miliband would probably give you the same stock answer when asked about Lewis Hamilton. "Respect".
Let's forget about the fact that he chooses not to contribute to the public purse with his wealth. He can go fast in a sports car. And he is good at waving a Union Jack. That is all that matters.
Makes you proud to be British.

Zagrebi malo dublje, ali ipak površno i plitko. Kaj je na otoku sveto? Njihov presveti jedini i omiljeni bezmudni sport - nogomet.

Re: Lewis Hamilton
Hamilton, who is negotiating a new contract with Mercedes, is aiming for his third championship this year and reckoned he would have time to challenge for plenty more. "I think if I'm lucky enough to be able to get to live out my whole Formula One career then - I've just turned 30 - I think I've got a good seven, eight years left in me," he said.
